SOCSO Safety Seminar
Cenderamata Estate in Dumpas area has been chosen by the Social Security Organization (SOCSO) as the first estate in Sabah to be venued as its seminar location on workers' safety here at Tawau on the 15thJune 2011. According to SOCSO's Deputy Chief Executive (Operations), Dr. Mohammad Azman Aziz Mohammad said the selection of the estate belonging to Sabah Softwoods Berhad (SSB), a Sabah state government investment company, was based on its position as a model estate. Adding to his lines, he mentioned, "SSB has won numerous management awards at the national level. The company also does not record many accidents involving its workers," after launching the Seminar on Prevention of Accidents Involving Estate Workers, here today. The one-day seminar, attended by SSB's estate and palm oil mill workers, aimed at giving exposure to the workers on their rights in case of accidents. Besides SOCSO, the seminar also participated by the Health Department and the Road Safety Department. On the rate of accidents involving workers in the country, Dr Mohammad said it was still high and continued to rise each year with an average of one accident every 10 minutes. He said that for the whole of 2010, there were 57,639 accidents involving workers compared with 55,300 in the previous year and total compensation paid out in 2010 was RM1.65 billion compared with RM1.35 billion in 2009. Together with the event were SSB's General Manager Oil Palm Operations Ibrahim Moin and Head Of Human Resource, Corporate Communication and Administration Stephen Binsos. |
